Advent calendars, which started as a way to mark the Christian season of Advent (which runs from Nov. 30 to Dec. 24 this year), have now lost much of their religious affiliation and are often seen as a fun way to count down to Christmas.

They come in many shapes and sizes — some simple enough to make at home in five minutes, and others from companies that feature special gifts each day — but they all have one thing in common: celebrating the holiday season surrounded by those you love.
