Abbotsford train collision kills man driving car

A man is dead after his car collided with a train in Abbotsford shortly after 3 a.m. PT Saturday.

Abbotsford Police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald says the crash between a Volkswagen Jetta and the train occurred in the 33000 block of Townshipline Road.

Following the collision, MacDonald says a number of train cars derailed some distance to the south near Highay 11 and Turner Street, hitting B.C. Hydro power poles and causing a power outage in parts of east Abbotsford and some areas of the downtown core.

Southern Railway of B.C. spokesman Singh Biln says three train cars were involved in the derailment, B.C. Hydro was called to deal with the downed power lines before crews could begin dealing with the derailment, he said.

Biln says clearing the tracks and re-railing the cars will likely take all day.
