VANCOUVER - A 28-year-old man who left his dog for dead after beating it with a baseball bat in 2012 has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a woman in a Vancouver home.

UPDATE, Nov. 10: The victim has been identified as Whitlock's mother.

Brian Whitlock was arrested early Sunday, several hours after police say he barricaded himself in a house on the city’s west side.

Const. Brian Montague says small fires were lit in the home before Whitlock was taken into custody, and that mental illness may be involved.

He says the woman’s body was discovered by a relative on Saturday night.

Whitlock is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday.

In April 2013, he pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge after beating his dog, Captain, with a baseball bat and leaving it for dead. Captain died a day after SPCA officials rescued the German shepherd from a Kitsilano dumpster.

Whitlock was sentenced to 60 days in jail.
