With the release of the Foo Fighter's "Sonic Highways" album this week, music fans not only get to witness the return of one of the biggest bands in the world, but also one led by '90s alt-rock icon Dave Grohl.

The '90s alternative movement represented a major shift in popular music away from '80s, pushing aside the spandex-clad hair metal rockers and electro-pop stars that once dominated the charts. The '90s offered a fuzzier, rougher and more eclectic take on music that quickly took over.

The alternative revolution established long lasting careers for some bands while leaving others as little more than one-hit wonders. So we thought we'd see what was up lately with all these alt-rock stars who once paraded their plaid flannel on MuchMusic and raged against the machine on FM radio.

Needless to say, we found some amazing then and now photos of everyone from Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam to Blur, Bjork and Beck to Silverchair, Stone Temple Pilots and Harvey Danger.

Some of them actually look better, and all of them dress better.

Oh, and making this inspired us to put together an Rdio playlist of the 99 best alternative songs of the 90..
