ASSÉ austerity demonstrations target downtown Montreal

The student group ASSÉ has gathered in downtown Montreal and is planning a number of demonstrations around the city's downtown Wednesday.

The demonstrations are to protest against the Couillard government's austerity measures.

About 25 students gathered at the corner of President-Kennedy Ave. and de Bleury St.

Police officials declared the protest illegal.

A poster from the student group states other demonstrations are also planned throughout the day to protest against oil and gas exploration, the banks, supplemental government fees, in addition to the government's austerity measures.
