EDMONTON - An Alberta contractor is facing child labour and safety charges after a 14-year-old employee fell from a roof.

Vital Contracting Ltd. of Airdrie and its operators are facing charges under the Employment Standards and Occupational Health and Safety codes.

The charges include inappropriately employing a person under the age of 15 years and failure to ensure the health and safety of the worker.

The company could be fined up to $100,000 and each individual could face a $50,000 fine.

The boy fell nearly four metres from the roof of a residential home in Lacombe in July.

Alberta Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour says the boy was briefly hospitalized.

The company and its operators' first court appearance is set for Dec. 19 in Red Deer.
