B.C. Couple Gets Lost With Alleged Meth Lab In Car, Busted At U.S. Border

B.C. Couple Gets Lost, Busted At U.S. Border With Alleged Mobile Meth Lab

A couple from Chilliwack, B.C. who got lost driving with an apparent mobile meth lab in their car was busted at the United States border.

Calum James Buchanan, 41, and Lola Crystal McKay, 24, were stopped at the Aldergrove-Lynden border crossing on Sunday evening when officers noticed a plastic tub with suspicious materials inside, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release.

The border officer inspecting the 1994 Pontiac Grand Am got sick from breathing in the fumes, the report states. Because of the "unknown nature of the materials," border officers called other agencies for help, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, Washington State Patrol, and the Bellingham Police Department's bomb unit.

Buchanan and McKay were taken into custody and turned over to Homeland Security special agents.

It turns out they never intended to enter the U.S. They ended up at the border after getting lost in road construction, Lynden Fire Chief Gary Baar told The Bellingham Herald.

Buchanan told officials they were trying to deliver the van to someone else in Canada in exchange for $500, according to the paper.

The duo appeared in Whatcom County court on Monday, charged with possession with intent to manufacture. McKay as been taken back to Canada, while Buchanan was being held on a $50,000 bond, reported MyChilliwackNews.com.
