Two teenage girls thought to have run away from home are set to return home to Vernon Monday.

Saylor Martian and Tina Kontos, both 15 years old, went missing on Friday.

On Sunday, Kontos called her family. Shortly after that phone call, the girls were found safe in Headingly, Man..

"We're thinking they've had a change of heart and most likely they got scared, which was a good thing, as it turns out," Kontos' mother Vicky Kontos told Daybreak South's Chris Walker.

Vicky Kontos says she doesn't know the details of how her daughter got to Manitoba, but she believes they were hitchhiking.

"They were certainly planning on escaping," she said.

"I guess they were struggling with social and emotional issues. We had no idea that our daughter was going through that."

The girls spent the night in Winnipeg with family friends. Another friend has flown to Winnipeg, and will fly back with the girls today.

Kontos says her daughter apologized over the phone, and wants to return home.

"I just want to hug her, and maybe I'll ground her until she's 40."
