RCMP in Kamloops have announced charges in connection with the shooting of Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jean Rene Michaud.

Kenneth Michael Knutson, 36, has been charged with attempted murder and three other charges.

Knutson was arrested yesterday afternoon after an extensive manhunt. He has a lengthy criminal record dating back more than a decade.

Earlier on Thursday, B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) announced it was no longer involved in the investigation into the shooting.

The IIO initially considered exerting its jurisdiction in the case, after it was revealed the suspect was shot in the arm by police during the incident.

However, it says it has determined after a review that it does not need to become involved — a determination it says is usually based on the severity of the suspect's injuries.

Michaud, a 13-year veteran of the force, was shot and critically wounded during a traffic stop during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
