FREDERICTON - Dominic Cardy will remain as New Brunswick's NDP leader after the party's council unanimously rejected his resignation.

Cardy announced his intention to step down as leader after his party was shut out in the September election.

He later ran in a byelection in the riding of Saint John East, but lost.

Stephen Yardy, executive director of the New Brunswick NDP, says the party's membership wants Cardy to lead them into the next provincial election.

Cardy says he is humbled by the support and looks forward to continuing to serve as leader.
