Minnesota Wild defenceman Marco Scandella has been suspended two games for a check to the head of New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson, the NHL announced Wednesday.

With less than three minutes remaining in the third period on Tuesday night, Nelson won the puck battle with Wild winger Nino Niederreiter and entered the New York end.

As Nelson gained the zone, he sustained a hit to the head by Scandella’s left shoulder.

The two-game ban means Scandella will forfeit $11,021.50 US.

It was also in the same game that Wild defenceman Keith Ballard suffered multiple facial fractures and a concussion after getting hit along the boards by Islanders winger Matt Martin

The Wild announced Wednesday that Ballard will be out indefinitely.
