A man has been arrested less than a day after someone drove off with an elderly couple's vehicle while they were in the midst of loading it up with groceries at a Barrie, Ont., plaza.

Barrie police issued a news release on Sunday, indicating they had been called to a local motel for a reported disturbance.

A 47-year-old man was then arrested for an outstanding parole warrant.

Police allege they soon learned this same man is responsible for the vehicle theft that occurred at the Wellington Plaza on Saturday afternoon.

The vehicle has been recovered. Police said the accused is in custody.
