A suspect has been arrested in the fatal hit and run of a Vancouver Island teacher, hours after a tearful public plea by the victim's wife.

A car struck and killed Paul Bally, 48, on Monday night as he was out for his regular bike ride in the Fanny Bay area of Comox Valley. His wife, Evelyn, found him lying alone in a muddy ditch four hours later, reported The Times Colonist.

At a press conference on Wednesday with her two children by her side, Evelyn Bally begged the driver to come forward, said CTV News.

“Who will teach my son to be a man? Who will walk my daughter down the aisle? Who is going to help me raise my children? He was my rock,” she said. "Please let our family have closure."

RCMP said a public tip led them to the 55-year-old Comox Valley suspect, who was arrested on Wednesday night. A 2003 Ford F350 pickup was seized from the property.

Charges are pending a court appearance on Thursday.

A GoFundMe page set up in support of the Bally family raised nearly $10,000 in just one day.
