A set of rare gold coins commemorating the 1984 papal visit of Pope John II have been handed in to the Kelowna, B.C. RCMP, who are trying to track down the rightful owner.

The coins were found abandoned outside the Capri Centre Mall on Dec. 17 and police believe they had likely been stolen.

Presented by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, the coins are limited edition and were in a leather case along with a letter of authenticity and a photo with an inscription on the back.

Efforts by police to trace the owner of these significant historical artifacts, considered to be of high monetary value, have failed so far.

Anyone who knows anything about the ownership of these coins are asked to contact Kelowna RCMP.
