Pop star Katy Perry takes the top spot among the stars of social media for the year to date.

In a ranking taking into account stars' buzz and followers across 12 social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Sina, Perry came out on top. She earned 24.7 million Facebook likes, 27 million Twitter followers, 9.5 million Instagram followers and 3 billion YouTube views.

Perry's on a hot streak: She was named next year's Super Bowl headliner, earned the year's most-watched music video on YouTube ("Dark Horse") and was 2014's most-streamed female artist on Spotify.

Second place in the social media race goes to video game commentator PewDiePie, who earned 5.7 billion YouTube views over the course of the year, more than anyone else in the Top 10.

Next in line is Taylor Swift, whose buzz came especially near year-end, surrounding the October release of her album "1989." She earned an impressive 31.5 million Facebook likes over the course of the year, was talked about by 1.6 million on Facebook and inched toward the 10 million mark for new Instagram followers.

The World Cup made its mark on the list. Shakira's fourth-place spot is largely the result of her World Cup song "La La La (Brazil 2014)," while footballer Cristiano Ronaldo lands in sixth and Pitbull, who recorded the official World Cup theme song "We Are One" with Jennifer Lopez and performed it at the opening ceremony, takes eight place.

The top 10 social media stars of the year, according to Starcount:

2. PewDiePie

3. Taylor Swift

4. Shakira

5; Justin Bieber

6. Cristiano Ronaldo

7. One Direction
