The TTC is offering $20,000 to help pay for the funeral of a 14-year-old girl struck and killed by a transit bus on Friday, according to CBC News.

TTC CEO Andy Byford said the transport agency is trying to do the right thing by approving the use of public funds toward helping Amaria Diljohn’s family with funeral costs.

He told The Globe and Mail the gesture is not a sign of culpability on part of the TTC.

“A single mom lost her only child under one of our buses just before xmas and couldn’t afford the funeral,” Byford said in a text message. “It’s the right thing to do.”

On Dec. 19, Diljohn was hit by a bus around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Neilson Rd. and Finch Ave. E. near her Scarborough home. She was crossing Neilson Rd. at the time when she was struck. The bus drove away from the scene.

The driver has been identified as a 27-year-old man, but his name is being withheld. Security video downloaded from the bus is also being reviewed by investigators.

Earlier this week, Byford said a review of the TTC’s bus and streetcar drivers is being “accelerated” in light of the fatal hit-and-run.

A trust has been set up at a Scarborough Scotiabank branch to accept donations for the Diljohn family.

“This is a very hard time for the family right now and anything helps,” said a Facebook memorial page dedicated to Diljohn.

Funeral details have not yet been confirmed.
