The IIO is investigating after a 14-year-old male pedestrian was struck by a car driven allegedly by an off-duty police officer.

The collision happened at 6:15 p.m. on Friday near the intersection of Mill Lake Road and West Bourquin in Abbotsford, B.C.

The teenager has been taken to hospital and is in serious condition, said Abbotsford Police Cst. Ian MacDonald.

The driver of the 2009 Mazda 3, who was identified as an off-duty officer, remained at the scene.

As this collision involves a member of the Abbotsford Police Department, the IIO has been called in to conduct an investigation.

Kellie Kilpatrick, a spokeswoman for the IIO, said it was on the scene of the collision.

"We would treat this like any of our investigations, so we would be processing the scene, identifying witnesses, setting up an interview with the involved off-duty officer, canvassing the area to see if there might have been video surveillance," she said.
