A 14-year-old pedestrian has died in hospital after being struck by a car driven by an off-duty member of the Abbotsford Police Department in B.C.
The crash happened on Friday evening at the intersection of Bourquin Crescent West and Mill Lake Road, said a news release by Abbotsford police Const. Ian MacDonald. The driver of a 2009 Mazda 3 remained at the scene, which is adjacent to the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre.
"The youth sustained serious injuries and in spite of being airlifted to hospital, did not survive his injuries. He died shortly before midnight last evening," said the Independent Investigation Office (IIO), a civilian body that investigates death and injury involving B.C. police.
Family and friends identified the victim as 14-year-old Marcus Larabie, reported CBC News.
Friends and police believe the teen may have been longboarding at the time, according to CTV News.
Kellie Kilpatrick, an IIO spokeswoman, said the off-duty officer was driving his personal vehicle and investigators talked to a witness who provided a statement.
"Our preliminary investigation shows that the officer driving was in a controlled intersection and he was travelling on the green light," she said.
"We would treat this like any of our investigations, so we would be processing the scene, identifying witnesses, setting up an interview with the involved off-duty officer, canvassing the area to see if there might have been video surveillance," Kilpatrick told CBC News.
