Pit Bull-Rottweiler Cross Mauls Saanich Newborn

Pit Bull Family Pet Mauls B.C. Newborn

A family's pit bull-Rottweiler cross mauled a 16-day-old baby in the southern Vancouver Island community of Saanich, B.C.

Saanich police said they received the report early Sunday morning. The girl was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries to her face.

The family has agreed to euthanize the 17-year-old dog, reported CBC News.

Barbara Watt, president of the Victoria City Kennel Club, told the Times Colonist that the idea of cross-breeding a Rottweiler with a pit bull was appalling.

“Perish the thought," said Watt. “People who cross breeds like that probably have no idea what they are bringing into the world.”

Saanich police Const. Nawid Akbar added in a statement, "When you have small children it's very important to know where they are in relation to pets because at the end of the day, pets are animals and anything can happen."

The investigation continues but police say charges of criminal negligence are being contemplated.
