Play-Doh's 'Dil-Doh' Dough Pump Freaks Out Parents

Parents Freak Out Over Play-Doh's Penis-Shaped Pump

A wave of complaints has forced Play-Doh to pull a phallic-looking toy from its cake-making playset.

The controversy, er, erupted Tuesday after mother Jennifer Turner posted a picture of the toymaker’s dough piping tool, claiming it “ruined” the family’s Christmas.

“This is NOT okay,” said Turner on Play-Doh’s Facebook page. The company has since responded to the outrage.

“We have heard some consumer feedback about the extruder tool in the Play-Doh Cake Mountain playset and are in the process of updating all future Play-Doh products with a different tool,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

Here’s the problem Play-Doh pump in question:

Despite the uproar, concerns over the shape of the plastic bit — which is molded with a climbing swirl and a ring of beads at the tip — aren't new. Controversy over the Play-Doh’s “rude” piping tool was first raised in November in a local news report from Tulsa, Okla.

“It’s pretty phallic,” said an unnamed woman, hiding a smile in the report. “It’s a pretty phallic cake-decorating piece. Not – not necessary, I don’t think.”

But not all parents are unnerved by the toymaker’s design choice. Some are clearly having fun with the brouhaha over the phallic faux pas, naming the piece Play-Doh’s “dil-doh.”

“Totally just ordered the cake mountain set. Just because I can tell the difference between an adult play toy and an icing dispenser,” said new customer Sarah Nonamaker on Facebook.

Others have called peeved parents to chill out.

“There is a picture of the tool on the box. Many of these people purchased this for their children already knowing about it,” Facebook user Kate Knott posted on the company’s page.

“Good grief people. Get a grip,” she said.

The company said if consumers want to exchange the toy with a slightly less offensive “replacement extruder,” they can call Hasbro’s customer service department at 800-327-8264.
