Fire rips through Yonge and Eglinton home on New Year's Eve

Toronto firefighters were kept busy New Year’s Eve battling a four-alarm house fire on Edith Dr. near Yonge St. and Eglinton Ave.

The fire started just before 7 p.m. in the house’s chimney, before spreading to its attic. The home’s residents were able to get out in time.

Firefighters tried to contain the fire, but had to get off the building’s roof as the flames started to break through.

At one point, 22 trucks and more than 90 firefighters were on scene, trying to keep the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes.

An aerial unit was called in to fight the fire from above.

Officials cut power to the area, and had to close down several nearby streets
