The Calgary Fire Department is urging drivers to use caution on snowy roads after extricating a woman from the twisted remains of an SUV that slammed into a wooden power pole.

The woman, the sole person in the vehicle, was taken to hospital in serious condition, the fire department said in a news release.

Fire crews were called to the scene on Highway 8 east of 69th Street S.W., at about 6 p.m. and found the power pole had been sheared off by the force of the collision.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident and no other injuries were reported, the fire department said. Highway 8 remains open.

Road conditions were equally bad outside the city, Alberta Transportation reported, with several sections of Highway 2 closed due to collisions at various times.

The southbound lanes near Bowden have been reopened following a multi-vehicle crash in the afternoon, the provincial government website said, but motorists are cautioned to expect major delays.
