Members of a small B.C. community are rallying together to raise money for the family of a homicide victim.

Matthew Hennigar, 23, and Kalvin Andy, 22, were killed in a double homicide in Anahim Lake on Boxing Day. Now a member of Hennigar's mother's family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the wife and one-year-old son he left behind.

"This campaign would help immensely to get them through this extremely hard time of grief and loss," states the page, which has a goal of raising $20,000. "Especially after Christmas and the huge expense of laying a loved one to rest."

The money will be used for funeral costs, the daily expenses for Hennigar's wife and son, and a trust account for his son.

People in Anahim Lake, a community located about 400 kilometres northwest of Vancouver, describe Hennigar as kind and friendly.

“I've actually had quite a few people say, 'Oh, Matthew would bring me my fire wood and come over and have a visit and do this for me and fix this [for] me and I am really going to miss him, one of those really all around good kid[s],'" Deana Wood, who runs Anahim Lake Trading, told CKNW.

Six people have been charged in the killings, with offences ranging from first-degree murder to manslaughter.

Cpl. Dave Tyreman said it appears the attackers and victims knew each other, but few other details have been released about what happened.
