CALGARY - Calgary firefighters have rescued a man from the icy Bow River.

It happened Monday evening just after 8:30 when the Calgary Fire Department received reports of a man clinging to an ice shelf on the river.

The aquatic rescue team arrived and was able to remove the man from the icy water, where he had been for about 20 minutes.

A news release from the fire department says the man was middle aged and was conscious and breathing when taken out of the river.

The man was taken to hospital.

Fire officials are warning people to stay away from the river edges as the ice may be undercut by the current and could be very dangerous.
