Suspect In Fatal Calgary New Year's Party Shooting In Custody: Police

A suspect in a Calgary New Year's party shooting that left one man dead and injured six others is being interviewed by police.

Calgary police said a man was taken into custody from a southwest home on Thursday evening. Investigators are talking to the suspect, who is believed to be an invited party guest, according to a news release.

No police official is available for comment until a scheduled news conference on Friday.

UPDATE: The man taken into custody has not been charged in relation to the shooting, but is still in custody on "unrelated matters," according to a City of Calgary news release issued Friday evening.

Police responded to multiple 911 calls of shots fired at about 5 a.m. on Jan. 1. More than 50 people were attending a house party in the southwest Killarney neighbourhood.

Abdullahi Ahmed, 26, of Calgary, died from his injuries in hospital.

The gunfire injured six other people — including someone driving past the home — leaving them with injuries ranging from minor to serious but stable, said police.

Toronto and Edmonton police were called in to help with background on party guests, reported CBC News.

Police said the home where the shooting occurred was rented about a month ago, and that officers hadn't been called to the location before.
