As the world reels from Wednesday's tragic shooting at satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris, standing in solidarity against violence is essential.
Joining the continuing vigils and demonstrations to honour the victims of the shooting, more than one thousand Montrealers gathered outside their city hall Wednesday, in near -21°C weather, reports the Montreal Gazette.
The crowd held "Je Suis Charlie" signs and candles, while a large wreath hung above the entrance to the building.
Those standing in the vigil had one message – no more violence.
“It seems to me that the magazine was saying ‘enough of religious extremism.’ And I think everyone needs to say ‘enough'," demonstrator Jeff Begley told the Gazette.
The Consulate General of France in Quebec echoed a similar sentiment in their statement.
“There are no words strong enough to condemn the attack that took place this morning in Paris. It is not only freedom of expression under attack, but democracy as a whole,” said the statement, according to CBC.
Similar demonstrations are being held across the globe, as the days of violence in Paris remind the world the freedom of speech is vital and must be defended. Here in Canada, vigils have been held across the country, from Vancouver to Toronto,
