Suspect in brutal attack on Edmonton-area girl to undergo mental health check

STONY PLAIN, Alta. - A judge has ordered a mental health assessment for the man accused in a brutal attack on a girl just before Christmas near Edmonton.

The six-yea-old was found near death on the Paul First Nation.

James Clifford Paul, who is 21, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, and kidnapping.

He made his second court appearance in Stony Plain Wednesday via closed-circuit television.

RCMP have described the attack as "horrific'' and said the suspect knew the girl.

Paul is to be back in court on Feb. 11. (CHED)
