One man is in custody after a tense, seven hour standoff with Vancouver police in East Vancouver.

Police say they responded to a man being assaulted in an apartment building in the 800 block of East 6th Avenue around 11:30 a.m. They found a man with minor injuries to his face and he was taken to hospital by paramedics for treatment.

A short time later, police say the suspect was found inside the apartment he shared with the victim. Police surrounded his suite, but he refused to leave his premises.

"Following seven hours of negotiations, police were unsuccessful in gaining his cooperation," said Sgt. Randy Fincham.

"Officers were ultimately required to obtain a warrant to enter the apartment in order to arrest the suspect."

Police say they finally took the man into custody with the assistance of a police dog around 7:30 p.m.

A 36 year-old man is now facing charges in relation to the alleged assault of his 47-year-old roommate.
