An apparent abduction attempt reported in Whitby, Ont., last week, was actually a case of mistaken identity, police say.

Durham Regional Police had issued a news release regarding an alleged incident last Wednesday in which a woman said a man pulled up alongside her in a pickup truck and attempted to grab her.

Police say that after they issued their news release, a man contacted investigators and they are now "confident" that he had mistakenly believed the woman was somebody he knew.

But when he realized it wasn't the person he thought it was, he "panicked and left the area in embarrassment."

Police thank the public for their assistance in the investigation.
