Markham parents sentenced for death of infant son

Two Markham parents pleaded guilty on Wednesday for the 2013 death of their one-month-old son and are sentenced to time in prison.

On Aug. 22, 2013, the parents brought their infant son a local hospital without vital signs, police said. York regional police were notified about the death. Initial investigation revealed suspicious circumstance surrounding the infant’s death that was later determined to be a homicide, police said.

The infant’s parents were arrested four days later for murder. They have been in custody since the arrest.

Kien Phat Tran, 22, pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter. He was sentenced to six years in prison.

Thi My Phuong Bui, 23, pleaded guilty to failing to provide the necessaries of life. She was sentenced to six months in prison.
