Clio Vancouver Office Transforms Into Modern Space (PHOTOS)

It's "one part parents' basement, one part high tech geek, with a touch of Vancouver thrown in on the side."

Vancouver tech company Clio has quickly grown to one of Canada's biggest startups since it launched in 2009. But its dark and dated headquarters did not match its bright outlook and ambition.

Last year, Clio raised $20 million in venture capital, bringing the total raised from backers to $27 million.

The company, which provides niche software for law firms to organize billing and deadlines, had taken over 17,000 sq.-ft. of space from IBM in Burnaby. Even with windows throughout, the furniture and cubicles were gloomy.

SSDG Interiors, who also designed HootSuite's new Vancouver base, breathed new life into Clio's office. The bright, open space is "one part parents' basement, one part high tech geek, with a touch of Vancouver thrown in on the side," said the designers' website.

The openness — even CEO Jack Newton doesn't have a separate office — showcases the company's "playful and energetic" culture with perks like catered Friday lunches.

Since Clio is a cloud-based company, IBM's now-useless server room was converted into a studio for fitness, dance, and yoga classes.

Of course, there are also the requisite toys that are now common in tech companies: an arcade game zone, foosball table, video game lounge, and acoustically sealed ping-pong room.

Clio also has offices in Toronto and Dublin, with remote staff in other parts of Canada as well as Chicago.
