WHITECOURT, Alta. - A town in northwestern Alberta may have snowmobiled its way into the record books.

Organizer Dave Tourcotte says 1,044 drivers on power sleds turned out Thursday night in Whitecourt looking to set a new high mark for most snowmobiles in a parade.

The current record is 820, but last weekend a snowmobile club out of St. Mary's, Ont., unofficially attracted 847 riders.

Tourcotte says Whitecourt has blown away either number, although Guinness World Records still has to verify the feat.

Tourcotte says riders came from across Alberta and British Columbia.

He says it was particularly gratifying to have snowmobiles of all different sizes involved and to see so many families participating.

"Lots of us, including myself, had our toddlers riding with us," he said. "This was meant to be for family and to represent Whitecourt and that's what we did."

Tourcotte is optimistic Whitecourt will soon be the new record holder.

"I was definitely feeling good about our numbers, just seeing the people coming in as we started registering, and I just have a feeling we're going to break the record."
