Steve Fonyo stabbed in possible home invasion in Surrey

CBC News has learned marathon runner Steve Fonyo has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after he was stabbed in a possible home invasion in Surrey early Friday morning.

Surrey RCMP will only say a 49-year-old man is in hospital following a targeted attack at his home in the 11000 block of 136 Street around 5 a.m. PT.

But neighbours say Fonyo has lived in the home since Christmas.

Police say their initial investigation suggests a home invasion involving three suspects who came to the home and assaulted a man.

Fonyo was 19 when he completed a one-legged run across the country, following in the footsteps of Terry Fox, who was forced to abandon his Marathon of Hope four years earlier.

However, since then, the one-time hero has battled personal demons including cocaine addiction and depression.

Five years ago Fonyo was stripped of his Order of Canada after piling up several criminal convictions, including impaired driving, assault with a weapon, fraud and theft.
