Firefighters battle residential blaze in Montreal's gay village

About 70 firefighters are on the scene of a blaze in a multi-apartment residential building on Champlain Street between Ontario and La Fontaine streets.

Luc Galarneau, a Montreal fire operations chief, said it took about an hour to get the flames under control.

The fire broke out after 1 p.m. on the third floor of the three-storey building and is currently spreading toward the roof.

Galarneau said they are taking every measure to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes.

He said all of the residents evacuated the building.
