Ferry stuck in ice off P.E.I.

A ferry travelling from Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Que., with 82 passengers onboard spent the night stuck in ice 14 kilometres off P.E.I.

The Vacancier left Cap-Aux-Meules, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning for a scheduled five-hour crossing to Souris.

Heavy ice stopped the ferry from getting to its destination, and the captain of the ship told Radio-Canada he is now waiting for a Coast Guard ice breaker to arrive.

The ferry company says that will happen sometime Wednesday afternoon. It has also resulted in a delay of the scheduled Wednesday morning crossing from Souris.
