Police have charged a former City of Calgary bus driver with the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl more than seven years ago.

Paul Rene Desmarais, 61, faces charges of sexual assault, sexual interference with a child under 16, and sexual contact with a youth by a person in authority.

Police say in 2007 Desmarais, who was 53 at the time, befriended a 14-year-old passenger who was a regular customer on his route.

Police allege he assaulted the girl in September of 2007, after getting her alone on his bus. They say she again encountered Desmarais in March of 2008 on a different bus route.

It's alleged that from March 2008 until June 2008, inappropriate sexual contact took place when the pair met several times at the driver's home.

The assaults were reported to the police by the victim in November 2014.

Anyone with information about the assaults is asked to contact Calgary Police Service at 403-266-1234, or to call Crime Stoppers.
