It may seem unexpected, but Lady Gaga knows how to solve a problem like Maria.
The "Applause" singer performed a medley of hits from "The Sound of Music" at the 87th annual Academy Awards on Sunday, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the film's release on March 2, 1965. After being introduced by Scarlett Johansson, Gaga sang snippets from four songs — "The Sound of Music," "My Favourite Things," and "Edelweiss" — before closing her set with "Climb Ev'ry Mountain."
The recently-engaged chanteuse commanded the stage with her powerful vocals and impressive range, with none of her trademark gimmicks. Gaga also sported a custom-made white Azzedine Alaia dress for the occasion.
Back in 1966, the aforementioned movie musical won five Oscars, including Best Picture. The film's star, Julie Andrews, also earned a nomination for Best Actress, and surprised Gaga (and a incredibly excited audience) afterwards with a tearful, warm embrace.
"Dear Lady Gaga, thank you for that wonderful tribute," said Andrews. "Oh my God. It really warmed my heart, it really did."
The "Mary Poppins" actress then went on to present the award for Best Original Score.
Gaga's performance was first announced back on Feb. 12, when Oscar show producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan dubbed it a "special tribute." This celebration of the film also follows the 2013 live rendition of "The Sound of Music" on NBC, where Carrie Underwood performed the lead role of Maria to mixed reviews.
