Trekkie Justin Trudeau Goes Viral With Vulcan Tribute To Leonard Nimoy

Ottawa Trekkies include Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz and the late Jack Layton

"Star Trek" fans around the world paid tribute to Leonard Nimoy Friday in the wake of the actor's death at the age of 83.

His former "Star Trek" co-stars, Hollywood heavyweights like Tom Hanks and real-life astronauts including Chris Hadfield also honoured the man best-known as Mr. Spock.

Even U.S. President Barack Obama issued a statement, saying he loved Nimoy's legendary creation, the "cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed" centre of the 1960s "Star Trek" series.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau also joined the outpouring of remembrance for Nimoy. "For us Trekkies he was – and always shall be – our friend. #LLAP," Trudeau wrote, using the abbreviation for Spock's trademark expression "Live long, and prosper."

Trudeau isn't the first Canadian politician to identify as a Trekkie. The late NDP Leader Jack Layton was well-known for his love of "Star Trek." He even had a uniform tailor-made for him.

Stephen Harper is rumoured to be a fan of the original "Star Trek" series, but we can neither confirm nor deny that rumour.

However Bank of Canada's governor, Stephen Poloz, is an openly avid "Star Trek" fan. During a speech at the Economic Club of New York last December, Poloz even asked "Does anybody besides me wonder what the banking system looks like in the background of Star Trek?”

It seems Mr. Spock's memory will live long and prosper in Ottawa.
