A recent Conservative Party Facebook post many called "fear mongering" has now drawn criticism from within the party itself.
Edmonton-Centre Conservative MP Laurie Hawn doesn't agree with the post, telling Metro Calgary he thinks it's an overreaction.
“I would not have posted that if I were in charge,” he said Wednesday.
The graphic features a quote from a YouTube video posted last week in which an al-Shabaab spokesperson threatens western shopping malls, naming West Edmonton Mall specifically.
The caption on the post encourages Canadians to add their names to a petition supporting the government's proposed anti-terror bill.
"Jihadi terrorists are threatening Canada – we need to give our police and security forces the tools they need to protect us from the threat of terrorism. Add your name if you agree."
Al-Shabaab's threat forced the mall to tighten security.
While Hawn is the only Tory MP to publicly disagree with the post, Alberta Progressive Conservative MLA Thomas Lukaszuk shared a similar sentiment.
However, another Alberta Conservative MP feels differently. Tim Uppal told CBC he thought the post contained important information and that the Tories' new legislation is necessary to stop potential terror attacks.
“The international jihadi movement absolutely has declared war on Canada,” he said. "What we are doing is trying to keep Canadians safe."
The controversial Bill C-51, which would expand the government's powers to stop terror plots and track down suspected extremists, passed its second reading in the House of Commons last week.
