SPRUCE GROVE, Alta. - Police gunfire erupted just before the arrest of a man accused of driving at an Alberta sheriff and ramming an RCMP cruiser.

Mounties say a sheriff tried to pull over a vehicle for a traffic violation on Highway 16 near Stony Plain, west of Edmonton, Sunday afternoon, but the person at the wheel drove at the officer and fled.

Several minutes later, a man rammed an RCMP cruiser in Spruce Grove, east of Stony Plain, when they tried to stop him.

A Mountie then fired a pistol and the fleeing driver stopped, but no one was hurt.

A 47-year-old resident of the Grande Prairie area, who is also wanted on several unrelated arrest warrants, was taken into custody.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
