Durst is the subject of a six-part HBO series detailing his life of wealth and privilege as well as suspected links to the deaths of his wife in New York and a friend in Los Angeles. He also went to trial in the death of a neighbour in Texas.
Lawyer Chip Lewis says Durst was arrested at J.W. Marriott hotel in New Orleans at 3 p.m. locat time Saturday by the FBI on a warrant for the murder of Susan Berman, his friend in L.A.
Lewis says Durst will appear in court Sunday afternoon and will waive extradition so he can be transported to Los Angeles to face the charges.
Lewis successfully defended Durst in the 2001 dismemberment death of his Galveston, Tex. neighbour.
Lewis says Durst has maintained his innocence in Berman's killing for years. For years, questions have also swirled around Durst about the disappearance of his first wife in 1982. He was acquitted by a jury, with a claim of self defence, in the shooting and dismemberment of a Texas neighbour in 2001.
HBO has been airing a documentary about Durst, called The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, and the final episode was slated to air Sunday night.
