Changes to Alberta Municipalities Act to boost transparency, accountability

EDMONTON - Changes that Alberta is proposing to how municipalities operate include a provision that would require councillors to follow codes of conduct.

Councillors would also have to meet a higher standard when it came to holding meetings behind closed doors.

And they would have to adopt multi-year operating and capital plans and adhere to clear and timely rules regarding annexations.

The changes are contained in a bill which has been introduced in the legislature.

It's the first move to update Alberta's Municipal Government Act.

A review of the act is to be completed by next year and more changes are in the works.
