Crown stays sex charges against Edmonton-area teacher

EDMONTON - An Edmonton-area teacher is no longer facing sex charges.

The Crown has stayed charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation against 44-year-old James Richard Pratt.

Pratt was charged last year after a female student came forward.

The teacher was removed from his position at Memorial Composite high school in Stony Plain, west of Edmonton.

A stay of charges means the Crown believes there’s no reasonable likelihood of conviction.

Prosecutors have one year to revive the charges if there’s new evidence.
