Shooting moose from vehicle lands Botwood man with house arrest

A man who shot a moose by discharging his gun out a passenger side window of his vehicle on the side of the highway in central Newfoundland has been sentenced to house arrest.

Ryan Singh of Botwood was charged in October 2013 after provincial fish and wildlife officers received a complaint someone had fired a gun from a vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway near Bishop's Falls.

Singh pleaded guilty and was sentenced last Wednesday for illegal big game hunting and firearms offences.

According to the Department of Justice and Public Safety, Singh discharged the gun through the passenger side window while he was sitting in the driver seat.

There was someone sitting in the passenger seat at the time the shot was fired.

Singh has to pay a combined total of $1,500 for hunting big game without a valid licence and discharging a firearm from a vehicle.

In addition to the fine, Singh has been sentenced to four months of house arrest and will be prohibited from holding a big game licence for five years.
