Canada names 40 swimmers to Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games team

Swimming Canada on Monday nominated 40 athletes to its Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games team.

Twenty-four men, including 19-time Paralympic medallist Benoit Huot, and 16 women heard their names announced by Canada’s chef de mission Elisabeth Walker-Young at a poolside ceremony at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.

“It is truly a highlight moment in an athlete’s career and I can still remember who I was standing next to and what I was wearing on the pool deck when I found out I had made the team for the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games,” Walker-Young, a four-time Paralympic swimmer, said in a statement released by Swimming Canada.

Besides Huot, a veteran of the national team at age 31, Adam Purdy of London, Ont., was nominated after a seven-year absence. He is a three-time Paralympian and double gold medallist at the 2000 Sydney Games.

On the women’s side, Montreal’s Aurelie Rivard was named. The 18-year-old won a silver medal at the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

The para-swim team is the first of 14 Canada will nominate for selection for the Parapan Am Games, which will be held from Aug. 7-15.
