During Steve Nash's first public appearance since announcing his retirement, the Canadian basketball icon said he had done all he could to try to win a championship.

"It was a lot of disappointment not to win a championship in my career," said Nash on Tuesday. "At the same time, I definitely left it all out there."

But championships are not the only thing that defines a player, and Nash wants to be remembered for the way he played the game.

"I simply want people to remember me as a competitor and a great teammate," said Nash. "That’s it. Those are the two most important things."

Nash thanked his fellow NBA players for the support they have shown him throughout his career.

"To walk away from the game with that respect and admiration is the greatest gift," said Nash.

The 41-year-old Canadian officially announced his plan to retire on Saturday through a letter to fans.
