Strathcona Sex Assault Spurs Crowdfunding Campaign

The woman was brutally attacked and sexually assaulted in her own home Thursday afternoon.

Neighbours have launched a crowdfunding campaign in support of the Vancouver woman who was the victim of a violent sex assault on Thursday afternoon.

The victim was attacked in her Strathcona home after an armed intruder barged into the house and tied her up.

A Good Samaritan overheard the woman's screams and rushed in, fighting with the suspect and restraining him until police arrived. The woman was later taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Money raised as part of the GoFundMe campaign will assist in her recovery, says the fundraising page.

"She was very brave and smart and strong. She fought back. She made noise," reads the posting. "This woman is a survivor, and will need as much support from the community as we can give her."

The campaign raised just over $2,000 of its $5,000 goal in 17 hours.

Caleb Timothy Heaton, 25, has been charged with several offences: break and enter, robbery, aggravated sexual assault, assault using a knife and a rock, choking, and unlawful confinement, according to court documents cited by Global News.
