Toronto Nepali Film Festival

Mar 28, Innis Town Hall

The festivals showcases films ranging from shorts to docs and features. The documentary Who Will Be a Gurkha looks at the long tradition of the British military employing young Nepali men for their Gurkha regiment, whose salaries and pensions prop up the Nepali economy. While the "trippy short" The Contagious Apparitions of Dambarey Dendrite follows a glue-sniffing Dambarey as he faces his demons on Kathmandu streets. Canadian Film Fest

Mar 25 to Mar 28, The Royal Theatre

Opening night film The Cocksure Lads Movie told the story of a British band on the cusp of stardom, which then breaks up within 10 minutes of landing in Toronto for a North American tour. Previews until Apr 1; runs till May 3, Tarragon Theatre

New Ideas Festival

Mar 11 to Mar 29, The Studio

In its 27th year, this festival provides a space to showcase "new writing, works-in-progress and experimental theatre." In the concluding week, you can see works such as Grief Circus, a multimedia work looking at the way "the internet and social media are changing the boundaries of privacy." There's also a staged reading of The Creases in My Sari, about a young woman looking to find out more about Sri Lanka, the country her mother left to start a new life.
