Tony award-winning playwright, performer and activist Eve Ensler never intended to write a play about vaginas.
But after listening to a woman lament about the state of her vagina following menopause, she became curious: what do women think about their vaginas?
Ensler interviewed more than 200 women about their vaginas and their experiences with relationships, sex and violence, and shaped the conversations into her groundbreaking play, "The Vagina Monologues."
First performed in 1995, "The Vagina Monologues" has since been published in 48 languages and performed in more than 140 countries.
In the video above, Ensler talks to MAKERS about the success of "The Vagina Monologues," her own experience with sexual abuse and violence, and founding V-Day to fight violence against women and girls worldwide.
