Joni Mitchell Hospitalized In Los Angeles

Canadian songstress Joni Mitchell is in "good spirits" after being hospitalized in Los Angeles.

Mitchell was found unconscious in her Bel Air home on Tuesday afternoon but was awake as paramedics took her to a hospital in the Los Angeles area, said a late-night update on her website.

She is in intensive care undergoing tests, but is "awake and in good spirits," read the statement. "Light a candle and sing a song, let's all send good wishes her way."

Born in Fort Macleod, Alta., Mitchell rose from performing in Saskatchewan bars and busking on Toronto streets to become an iconic voice of the Woodstock generation.

Perhaps best known for "Big Yellow Taxi," the eight-time Grammy winner was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Mitchell is also a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto and a commemorative stamp, and is a companion of the Order of Canada.

The folk rock legend has released 19 original albums. "Blue" from 1971 ranks 30th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time.'' Her distinctive voice and profound lyrics have touched countless performers from Prince to Taylor Swift.

She told Billboard magazine in December that she has a rare skin condition, Morgellons disease, which prevents her from performing. She is also a longtime smoker, telling The Telegraph in 2007, "Smoking is one of life's great pleasures."

As with music, Mitchell taught herself painting as a child and has produced hundreds of works in ink, watercolour, and acrylic.
